Melano CC is one of Rohto's genuine cult successes in Japan, built around vitamin C and best known for its work on the marks and unevenness left behind by old blemishes. This face wash brings enzymes into that story, which is what makes it different from an ordinary daily cleanser.

The enzyme is a protease, and its job is to break down the keratin and hardened sebum that clog pores and turn into blackheads — the sort of congestion that ordinary washing simply pushes around. Alongside it sits a vitamin C derivative working on tone and clarity. The result is a smooth, low-foaming wash that leaves the nose and chin visibly clearer over a few weeks, without scrubs, strips or anything abrasive.

How to use

Squeeze a two-centimetre length into wet hands and work into a lather. Massage over damp skin, spending a little longer on the nose, chin and anywhere prone to congestion, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

Start with three or four times a week rather than daily, and build up as your skin tells you. Follow with your lotion while skin is still slightly damp, and wear sunscreen through the day.
